Beautification

The current Township Board has placed a large emphasis on "beautification" around Georgetown Township.  "Beautification" in the most simple terms, means "to make something more beautiful."  More specifically, in regards to a municipality, "beautification" most often refers to maintaining green space, planting trees or shrubbery, commercial facade and site improvements, streetscape items including decorative light poles, benches, trash receptacles, and plantings and brick or cobblestone paving among other improvements.

Commercial Site Improvements

In 2010, the Township completed their Master Plan which included a "Future Land Use Map and Rationale" to reflect upon the expected continued development of the Township as a high quality residential community.  The plan identified the main corridors and gateways to the community to call for beautification, including:

Corridors:

Jenison Commercial Core
(land adjacent to Chicago Dr., Baldwin St. and Cottonwood)
Chicago Drive Corridor
Baldwin Street Corridor

East End of Baldwin
(where the on-off ramps connect to I-196)
East Chicago Drive
(near the Main St. intersection)
West Chicago Drive
(near the City of Hudsonville boundary)

Gateways:

Suggestions for improvements in the identified areas include:

- Improve appearances
- Update landscaping
- Screen off-street parking areas visible from the roadways with walls, landscaping or
  berms
- Identify municipal boundaries
- Incorporate vital, innovative and creative signage, landscaping and other exterior
aesthetic elements that help define the community

Recently, the Township Board expressed interest in moving forward with creating a Beautification plan for the Township.  This plan will likely focus on overall beautification, but more specifically, streetscapes along the main corridors, landscape and/or signage features at the gateways and a marketing or branding platform for identification purposes.  As the Township Board and staff move forward with this project, please continue to check back for updates and any other information.
