A backwater valve will help prevent raw sewage from backing up into your basement by allowing sewage to only flow one way (out of your home). A backwater valve can be installed in the basement at the exit point from the home or building, or in the sewer lateral outside of the building. A home may be susceptible if the lowest drain is less than 24" above the nearest upstream manhole.
If you already have a backwater valve or are planning to install one, regular maintenance will be necessary to make sure that it is operating properly at all times. For Your Information : As a courtesy, summer sewer rates for residential customers are based on winter consumption.
However, there is a minimum quarterly sewer charge of 12 units. BILLING AND MINIMUM UNITS Backwater Valve aka "Backflow Preventer"
During a backflow/backup event, the main line valve would completely close to prevent sewage from entering the building. The valve automatically reopens when the condition subsides.
