Elections

Please visit our Elections page for detailed elections information. Here are some tips for new residents:

  • Most often, when you update your driver's license address at the Secretary of State you are also updating your voter registration. You can check with us a couple weeks after you visit SOS to make sure your registration updated.
  • If you were on the permanent absentee mail ballot list in your prior municipality, you will stay on it when you move to Georgetown.
  • When you move to Georgetown and register to vote, you will be issued a new Voter Registration Card. You do not need this card to vote, but it does tell you your precinct location. When you go to vote, you only need your photo ID.

Utilities

Most utility services are privatized in Georgetown.

Public Safety and Road Maintenance Services

Policing is provided by the Ottawa County Sheriff's Department.

Georgetown Township has its own Fire Department, which is largely staffed by paid-on-call firefighters, with four full-time staff members including Fire Chief Matt DeWitt.

Snow plowing and street repaving are provided by the Ottawa County Road Commission.

Tax Information

Like many municipalities, Georgetown has a summer and winter property tax.

  • Summer taxes are available in July and are due by September 14.
  • Winter taxes are available in December and are due by February 14.
  • Both the summer and winter tax cover all 12 months of a calendar year, but are due on different dates because they pay for different things.
    • Summer taxes are the larger bill and pay mostly for school/education taxes.
    • Winter taxes pay mostly for County/Township taxes.
    • Georgetown has one of the lowest municipal tax rates around at only $2.25 per $1,000 of taxable value.
  • Unfortunately you cannot sign up to have your taxes be paid via ACH auto-pay.
  • Property tax law is governed by the State of Michigan, and Michigan does not have a senior citizen tax exemption.
